Meet Belle: Life on Our Dairy Farm
There was a time when I didn't give much thought to where my milk came from. Like most people, I bought it at the grocery store and went on about my day.
But the more I started paying attention to the food I was bringing into my home, the more I wanted to know where it came from, how it was produced, what went into it, and what was taken out.
Now I have my own dairy cow, Belle, right here at Broken Picker Farm in Red Level, Alabama. And yes, I drink raw milk!
Belle and Harrison- A Little Milk and a Lot of Personality
For me, choosing raw milk comes down to a few things. I love the taste! You can't beat the rich cream, the fact that it's whole milk (really whole milk), and knowing exactly where it comes from.
Raw milk is naturally a source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin B12. These nutrients help support our bodies, including our bones and muscles.
I choose raw milk because I enjoy it in its original form. And if you've ever seen that thick cream line sitting at the top of a jar of fresh whole milk, you know exactly what I'm talking about!
One of the biggest reasons I started raising more of my own food was because I wanted to know where it came from.
When I walk outside to milk Belle, I know the cow producing my milk. I know what she's eating, how she's cared for, and what goes into keeping her healthy and clean.
Belle isn't just a cow standing in a pasture. She's a big part of Broken Picker Farm.
I spend time with her every day, and believe me, she has no problem letting me know when breakfast is taking too long or when she wants to be in the spotlight for a picture!
There's a lot of work that goes into keeping a dairy cow, from feeding and cleaning to milking and getting that fresh milk chilled quickly, which is extremely important.
But it's work I enjoy.
When I started Broken Picker Farm, I wanted to raise food I would be happy to bring into my own home. I know there are other families who want that same connection to their food.
You want to know who raised it, how the animals are cared for, and be able to ask questions directly to the person doing the work. That's what I want my farm to offer.
Whether it's milk from Belle, eggs from my hens, or pasture-raised chicken, I want you to know where it came from. And if you've ever been curious about Belle, you're always welcome to ask me about her. I can talk about that cow all day!
